Gear4Goals: Understanding the Experiences of Life

What is it about sports that makes it the great equalizer? Why are people so fanatic about sports? Why would a doctor like Dr. Jeff Kahrs travel to Kenya, Africa, with sports equipment for children who lack even the basic essentials such as food and water?

Being devoted to my son, but not to sports, understanding the experiences of life has taught me that there is a place for being enthusiastic about athletics. My son, Isaac, made up for the lack of my family’s involvement in sports by participating in:

  • baseball
  • football
  • ice hockey
  • roller blade hockey

Watching him play with his peers, especially ice hockey, never ceased to inspire me. Overcoming ADHD in his youth, sports helped A LOT in equalizing his life to:

  • motivate him to commit to his education
  • enjoy an activity in which he excelled
  • participate in a team environment
  • prepare him for the politics of business
  • give him the opportunity of coaching

Why is sports important to those in extreme poverty?

Visiting Kenya in January of 2013, I had the opportunity to watch my son play soccer with the students of Ingrid Education Centre. Isaac spoke a language with these children they understand well, becoming involved with them at a kinetic level that

transcends nationalities and race. Dr. Jeff Kahrs understands this common connection, as do the individuals at Gear4Goals, who work under the umbrella of Dreamweaver International and the direction of Dr. Warren Bruhl.

The Gear for Goals project has already been instrumental in providing sports equipment to thousands of children. It is their belief that when children are given the opportunity to know sports in their lives, renewed hope and purpose is stirred in the soul of a child. Hope is often the only thing a child can cling to when he does not know where he may get his

next drink of water or his next meal. Hope is nurtured through faith and the practice of providing opportunity. Sports and the arts, which are the foundation of Gear for Goals, provide the hope a child needs to live on and smile. When we hand a child a baseball mitt or a soccer ball and he now has something to play with, a spark of joy is ignited. It’s magical. Humanitarian work is a multifaceted work that requires a comprehensive view of care and Dreamweaver International is committed to this task.

How can you help?

Traveling to Kenya and distributing soccer balls to needy children as Dr. Jeff Kahrs and I did MIGHT be on your list of lifetime goals; however, you could also participate by:

  • becoming a compassionate associate
  • purchasing one sports equipment item
  • helping collect sports equipment
  • bringing awareness to your team
  • donating money to Gear4Goals

Providing sports equipment to children in poverty sends a clear message that they are worthy of having opportunity, dreams, and goals just the same as any other child. Whether in poverty or with a disability, sports creates an environment for change that allows a child to focus the hope they have in their hearts on something tangible, subjugate the messages of lack, and find their inner strength to excel.
