Money Truths with the Teachable Spirit

Recently, the teachable spirit attended a Fundraising from the Heart workshop featuring Lynne Twist, author of the book, Soul of MoneyLynne’s philosophy resonates with me more than any other approach to money I have ever encountered. I traveled to the Upaya Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico via Albuquerque, to broaden my understanding of the subject. The following information is taken from my notes at that workshop.

What is the truth about money? How can these truths transform our life? How can the teachable spirit find true prosperity?

Meeting Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller became  a serendipity of Lynne’s work with The Hunger Project, whom she met towards the end of his life when he was well into his 80’s. Lecturing all over the world on the subject of the Intellectual Integrity of the Universe, using various models he had created, he would demonstrate the way the universe was made, with terms she did not understand; however, he did make one statement that made sense to her.

The most important thing, which has happened to humanity recently, is that we have passed a very important threshold. We are doing so much more now with so much less! We are living in a world where there is enough for everyone everywhere to live a healthy life with no one left out. —Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller

Bucky, as he was endearingly called, declared the idea of sufficiency, that there was enough. Making this statement in 1976, he said that it would take 50 years for the world to shift from thinking in the “you or me” paradigm to a “you and me” paradigm, where we can both make it in this world. This is an entirely different way of thinking. All social systems in the world are rooted in a YOU OR ME paradigm. We are coming into a time when we intuitively know that at the root, the philosophy upon which they are built is flawed. As this shift begins to take place, our institutions will crumble.

Understanding this concept is totally transforming to the teachable spirit.

Sufficiency is distinct from abundance; an exquisite experience that we cannot achieve in consumerism. It is the joy of living in uncertain conditions, the resilience, dignity, and beauty of dealing with impossible situations. True abundance grows out of our appreciation and gratitude for what we have, creating joy, integrity, and wholeness.

The RADICAL SURPRISING TRUTH about money is the principle of SUFFICIENCY:

Letting go of trying to get more of what you do not really need…
Using the energy to pay attention to what you already have…
Frees up oceans of energy to pay attention, nurture, and share what you have.

Making a difference by sharing what you have…
Causes it to expand.

Money Truth #1: What you appreciate appreciates.

Sufficiency is met by the universe exquisitely when the teachable spirit in you sees your needs are constantly and repeatedly being met. Sometimes a crisis is provided to develop in us a huge teaching, whose experience becomes a painful potent blessing, ultimately leaving the teachable spirit more resilient, more passionate, and more brilliant for creating future success in our lives and contribution to the world. The context of sufficiency is to dwell in the house of sufficiency, standing in the truth.

The universe provides.

It is a state of BEING not an amount of anything. Out of our appreciation for this amazing fact, IT EXPANDS. When you really appreciate, nourish, and bring attention to what you have, the teachable spirit will experience standing in, breathing in, and dwelling in, the context of sufficiency.

The meaning of wealth is well-being, or the well of being; it is the infinite powerful source of your own life. Pick one person you can think of who appreciates and loves you. In their presence, you grow and feel fully yourself, experiencing an expanded sense of freedom, openly nourished by their love; you feel you can truly fly and soar.

Money Truth #2: Money is like water; it has to flow.

The amount is not the issue. A 70 year old woman in Harlem named Gertrude made the following observation:

“Money is like water; it flows through every life. We are just custodians. Some have a flood, some have a trickle, but it needs to flow where it will do the most good. When we hold onto it, just like water, it gets sick. When you let it flow, it is a carrier of your commitment, hard work, and love.”

Money Truth #3: Collaboration is the source of prosperity.

Joining in partnership, doing work together, creates charity in solidarity. Looking at it from the viewpoint of co-equal partners with people living in need changes the outcome. They know more about their situation than we ever will. By partnering in authenticity, money received transforms the giver and the receiver.

No one knows this better than Dreamweaver International working with the Maasai in the Kimana Rift Valley of Kenya, or the partnership Ingrid Education Centre created with the community of Kayole and Mantopeni in Nairobi, Kenya. Each offers the opportunity to “help the needy become the needed,” as Dr. Warren Bruhl is fond of saying. As stated earlier, the dollar amount is not the issue. Consider the value of your precious resources sown into the lives of the children through Gear for Goals, for example.

The money is spent once, but the value of the gift is repeated every time a child swings the bat.
