Reflecting on Scripture with Colin Redmond

Growing up as a child, I had the distinct privilege of visiting my grandparents’ wheat ranch in eastern Washington and observing how life is lived in an environment where water was precious and the nearest neighbor lived a mile away. Quoting the scripture,

Whoever gives even a cup of cold water in my name will by no means lose his reward.

–Matthew 10:42

…my grandmother would shut off the TV and offer a glass of cold water to a visiting neighbor, relative, or friend. Reflecting on scripture, I wonder:

What reward does one receive for giving a glass of water?
What reward does one receive for giving a soccer ball?
How does engaging with giving change our lives?

Colin Redmond, an 11 year old boy from Northbrook, a suburb north of Chicago, Illinois, chose to celebrate his birthday by collecting sports gear for the children of Kenya with Gear for Goals (G4G), a program of the non-profit, Dreamweaver International.

Additionally, Colin requested money for his birthday instead of gifts, which he then used to purchase G4G soccer balls from the “One Gives One” program of the charity. Dr. Warren Bruhl, Executive Director of Gear for Goals, encouraged Colin to write a letter to the recipients of the soccer ball in Kenya. Colin wrote,

Dear Friends,

This is a picture of my soccer team and of me playing goalie. I love playing sports, especially soccer. I hope you enjoy the ball and playing the game as much as I do.

Your friend, Colin

Reflecting on scripture with Colin, I am reminded of the text from Psalms,

Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. –Psalm 8:2

When Colin asked for donations, his friends responded by bringing over 500 pieces of used sports items to share with children around the world. When Dr. Warren Bruhl asked his father, John, what makes him so special, he shared that he and his wife have always instilled a sense of purpose in Colin, and how important it is to help people less fortunate. John has traveled around the world and knows first hand the devastating impact poverty has on people’s lives. Young people like Colin make a difference in the world because they understand that,

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.

–Proverbs 11:24

Donating two G4G soccer balls to children in Kenya, Colin personally signed the balls accompanied by the letter that included a picture of him and his team. In return, the recipients wrote a letter of thanks back to Colin. Providing sport, hope, and opportunity via G4G, they are now friends 10,000 miles apart, but close through their love of soccer.

Meritei Anyika became one of the recipients of Colin’s soccer balls because he carried a very heavy bag about 150 yards and was very supportive of the coaching team. The volunteer team felt he was worthy of receiving the G4G ball donated by Colin. —Dr. Warren Bruhl

Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward. –Matthew 10:40-42

Remarkably, many children in Kenya will never be able to own their own soccer ball because they are simply too expensive (about $40-$50 US), which is about 1/2 to 2/3 of the average amount of money a laborer earns in Kenya per month.

Join Colin today by participating in the “One Gives One” program of G4G because giving a soccer ball to a child in Kenya has such a huge impact of sport, hope, and opportunity, changing the life of the giver as well as the receiver.

Just as Colin’s life will never be the same because of his simple gesture of kindness, so you, too, can participate, sharing your love of sports with someone you have never met who would not experience it without your help.
