Strategies for Success with the Teachable Spirit

Teaching a Strategies for Success class at Everest College gives the teachable spirit the opportunity to receive ideas from students in the discussion of how to be successful. Sometimes the weariness of attempting to be a better human being can get tiresome. Sometimes our salvation can come from finding a love for something like sports.

How do we stay motivated to achieve success? How does sports provide the opportunity for success? What does the teachable spirit think is at the heart of strategies for success?

A student in my class captured the essence of my lecture with the following three points. I feel that these three statements really reflect the heart of strategies for success.

  • Remembering where I came from.
  • Understanding and honoring where I am today.
  • Relishing the challenge of where I am going.

Recently, a friend of mine, Stephn McNeal, posted a story about Caron Butler, who just signed a contract this year with the Detroit Pistons.

A drug dealer at the age of 11, Butler had been arrested 15 times before his 15th birthday. He didn’t discover his love for the game until he was forced to embrace it while serving time in a detention center. He turned his life around, of course, becoming the Big East Player of the Year at Connecticut, a lottery pick in the 2002 Draft, a two-time All-Star and NBA champion with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011. His story has come full circle with him now wearing the uniform of his (near) hometown team. However, his humble beginnings and how fortunate he was to overcome them remain the most compelling part of the truly unbelievable real story of Caron Butler.

This video of Butler’s story really epitomizes the strategies for success outlined by Tammy and embraced by the teachable spirit.

Dr. Warren Bruhl understands this concept well, which is why he is working to provide sports gear for children in countries where they cannot afford the equipment. Gear for Goals collects and delivers this equipment to places like the Kimana Rift Valley of Kenya to provide the opportunity of sports, creating hope and strategies for success simultaneously. Regardless of the background, sports is the great equalizer, offering a kinetic way to rise above life’s circumstances and immediately implement strategies for success.
