Developing Character: Judging NCFCA Participants

Twice this year I have had the honor and the privilege to judge for a National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA) in Olympia, and in Richland, Washington. What a treat to see these home schooled children (ages 13-18) deliver their speeches! Duly impressed and thoroughly impacted by their work, I had extreme difficulty in determining placement, e.g., first, second, third, etc. The humorous round of speeches was the one I chose to judge in Olympia. I encountered speeches involving: Shrek fairy tales Arsenic and Lace Shakespeare’s version of Star Wars All memorized and complete with changes in characterization, including sounds of Chewbacca! What is authenticity? Why is it important? How do you achieve authenticity? Finding something completely genuine in life means keeping that item as a treasure for future posterity or for your own pleasure. In understanding the experiences of life, I have been given the rare opportunity of driving a 1984 El Camino, which was purchased by my grandfather in December of 1983. Cleaning out the glove box one day, I found the original receipt for $11,000. As a wheat farmer in Eastern Washington, my grandfather had obtained prosperity by hard work and clinging to a few principles, which he shared with my grandmother.
