Alone with the Teachable Spirit

How can you be happy alone? What does the teachable spirit need to do to create happiness when you are alone? These are very difficult questions to answer, especially if we are busy people that have families and care for children. My life is serene now compared to what it was in the days when family was the focus; however, the work I was doing in my family’s life at that time would have benefited from answering these two questions. The scripture says, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Do you see that loving yourself is the foundation for loving your neighbor? The care that you take in meeting your own needs will be the same care you take in meeting those closest to you. Yeshua (Jesus) told a story in reference to this concept: And behold, a lawyer stood up...

Professionalism and the Teachable Spirit

What makes people stand out in the work force? What characteristics help an individual have superior results in their career? How does the teachable spirit define professionalism? Professionalism is defined by our inner character, the behavior we exhibit, and the image we project. It is about high-quality service to others through our work and a keen respect for others’ rights. Consequently, professionalism becomes part of the fabric of our life, the very nature that we engage with people on a daily basis. Learning from Cats with the Teachable Spirit

Remaining open to potential learning opportunities allows the teachable spirit to learn from any source. Pets provide an abundance of joy through their presence, antics, and need of our nurturing. Recently, a friend loaned me a book entitled, Everything I Know About Life I Learned from My Cat, by Hope Lyda, with incredibly gorgeous paintings by Lesley Anne Ivory. Enjoying the exquisite art and lovely idioms about cats, I also encountered delightful epiphanies, such as the following: The Best Gifts in Life Are Relationships Never Give Up Hope Personal Space Is Good Be Careful What You Ask For Ritual Is Important A Life Is as Good as the View Love the One You are With Miracles Can Happen Experiencing a very close friendship where we just “get” each...

Money Myths with the Teachable Spirit

We make the mistake of putting money in the center because we live in a culture that values money highly. We need to defang our view of money because we have hurts and wounds around money, and suffering around insufficiency. It is not so much a function of less or more; the wealthiest people have the most upset. They cannot sleep because there are so many things that could go up or down. Individuals born into families of wealth feel uncomfortable with it. The vicious cycle of wealth creates just as much suffering as the vicious cycle of poverty. —Lynne Twist, Fundraising from the Heart workshop, Santa Fe, New Mexico, September 2014 How did the myths surrounding money get created? What are the three pervasive myths regarding money? How do these lies have a...

What is Family? With the Teachable Spirit

While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But He replied to the man who told Him, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?” And stretching out His hand toward his disciples, He said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” –Matthew 12:46-50 What was so attractive about the disciples that he would choose to be with them rather than his mother and siblings? Was Yeshua (Jesus) brushing aside his biological family? What is family to the teachable spirit? During a counseling session a few years ago, the concept of creating your own family was brought to my attention. The idea was...
