Poverty or Riches: Reflecting on Scripture

How do we live in this world of disparity between poverty and riches? What should be our mindset in regards to their polarity? How should we shape our thinking when considering our own path?   Reflecting on scripture reveals insight on this controversial subject: Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die: Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God. –Proverbs 30:7-9 Thinking about wealth and obtaining riches has been a pursuit of mine for years, knowing that to achieve it, I must first work on my spiritual life and acquire integrity...

Authenticity: Understanding the Experiences of Life

What is authenticity? Why is it important? How do you achieve authenticity? Finding something completely genuine in life means keeping that item as a treasure for future posterity or for your own pleasure. In understanding the experiences of life, I have been given the rare opportunity of driving a 1984 El Camino, which was purchased by my grandfather in December of 1983. Cleaning out the glove box one day, I found the original receipt for $11,000. As a wheat farmer in Eastern Washington, my grandfather had obtained prosperity by hard work and clinging to a few principles, which he shared with my grandmother. Every ten years he would purchase a brand new El Camino with cash. Learning that the El Camino would be discontinued, and not knowing when that would be, he...

Developing Character with Ruth

What do you spend your time thinking about? Where does your mind wander? What are the predominant emotions that flavor your days? The Bible is replete with stories of individuals who changed their destiny because they changed their thinking. Developing character with Ruth, we see how she was encouraged by Naomi, her mother-in-law, to return to her mother’s house after the death of her husband, but refused and stuck with Naomi instead: But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following after you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from...

Character Development with Hannah

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM? Do you have a dream to do something for God? Do you think your dream is too marvelous for you to pursue? Do you think your particular dreams are too odd to come true? According to Ephesians 2:10, “You are His workmanship, created in Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus) for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that you would walk in them.” If we are His workmanship, He designed us for a specific purpose. What is that purpose other than the desire you have in your heart? Frankly, it amuses me how God designed us.  He created us to pursue our heart’s desires. Psalms 37:4 tells us, “Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” When we delight in the Lord, it pleases Him to give us the desires...
