Alone with the Teachable Spirit

Alone with the Teachable Spirit

How can you be happy alone? What does the teachable spirit need to do to create happiness when you are alone? These are very difficult questions to answer, especially if we are busy people that have families and care for children. My life is serene now compared to what it was in the days when family was the focus; however, the work I was doing in my family’s life at that time would have benefited from answering these two questions. The scripture says, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Do you see that loving yourself is the foundation for loving your neighbor? The care that you take in meeting your own needs will be the same care you take in meeting those closest to you. Yeshua (Jesus) told a story in reference to this concept: And behold, a lawyer stood up...

Learning from Cats with the Teachable Spirit

Remaining open to potential learning opportunities allows the teachable spirit to learn from any source. Pets provide an abundance of joy through their presence, antics, and need of our nurturing. Recently, a friend loaned me a book entitled, Everything I Know About Life I Learned from My Cat, by Hope Lyda, with incredibly gorgeous paintings by Lesley Anne Ivory. Enjoying the exquisite art and lovely idioms about cats, I also encountered delightful epiphanies, such as the following: The Best Gifts in Life Are Relationships Never Give Up Hope Personal Space Is Good Be Careful What You Ask For Ritual Is Important A Life Is as Good as the View Love the One You are With Miracles Can Happen Experiencing a very close friendship where we just “get” each...

Progress with the Teachable Spirit

How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight? –Deuteronomy 32:30 Why is it that doing the work by yourself takes such a long time? What is it about teaming up with another teachable spirit that causes the work to progress far more quickly? Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has no one else to lift him up! –Ecclesiastes 4:9-10   Meeting Dr. Jeff Kahrs in August 2013 became a watershed of events in the life of the teachable spirit. Originally, I was pursuing my work in Kenya alone. I never considered whether I should do it any other way; to me, that was just the way it was. Honestly, I had...

Finishing with the Teachable Spirit

Finishing with the Teachable Spirit

What does it mean to be finished? What does finishing a garment look like? Why is it so difficult to finish a project? Tailoring is one step above the work of a seamstress. Attending Clover Park Technical College (CPTC) as a student in the Sewing Design and Specialist class, the teachable spirit was told that being a tailor meant learning how to do hand work. Much of what goes into making a man’s suit look finished is the fine art of working with thread, needle, and thimble. The class at CPTC included 2,160 hours, complete with instructions on how to make a pattern for a wedding dress and man’s suit. Any amount you pay for a pattern from the store is nothing compared to the excruciating hours it takes to create a pattern start to finish. Subsequently,...

Mastering Life through Healing with Dr. Jeff Kahrs

Mastering life is about finding solutions and resolving issues we encounter on our journey. My business coach, Kathy Brandon, the Happiness Chick from the Ready for Happiness Group, told me that God puts things in our lives so that when we find a resolution for it, when we overcome it, we then feel compelled to share that with the world; it becomes our gift to society. Promoting the solution becomes our way of mastering life. When we are on a mission to be physically better, to change and become healthier, so that we can be of better service in the world, we find solutions that permeate our life and, in the process of sharing those with others, we ourselves become healed. I find this very peculiar, that getting well requires sharing, educating, and ultimately...
