The Teachable Spirit of Marco

Who is Marco? What was he doing in Kimana, Kenya? How did his teachable spirit help the Maasai? Marco, the Maasai interpreter from Tanzania, wound his way into our hearts through his passion for sharing the understanding of chiropractic care with his fellow Maasai. Leaving his boma in Tanzania to become a tour guide, Marco traveled to Arusha to learn the necessary skills for that vocation: how to drive a vehicle mechanics first aid the animals of the region During a lull in his work in January, Dreamweaver International came to Kimana with a medical team from Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine accompanied by three chiropractors, Dr. Warren Bruhl, Dr. Jeff Kahrs, and Dr. Dave Neubauer, and other medical personnel. Dr. Scott Smith invited Marco...

Money Truths with the Teachable Spirit

Recently, the teachable spirit attended a Fundraising from the Heart workshop featuring Lynne Twist, author of the book, Soul of Money. Lynne’s philosophy resonates with me more than any other approach to money I have ever encountered. I traveled to the Upaya Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico via Albuquerque, to broaden my understanding of the subject. The following information is taken from my notes at that workshop. What is the truth about money? How can these truths transform our life? How can the teachable spirit find true prosperity? Meeting Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller became  a serendipity of Lynne’s work with The Hunger Project, whom she met towards the end of his life when he was well into his 80’s. Lecturing all over the...

Money Myths with the Teachable Spirit

We make the mistake of putting money in the center because we live in a culture that values money highly. We need to defang our view of money because we have hurts and wounds around money, and suffering around insufficiency. It is not so much a function of less or more; the wealthiest people have the most upset. They cannot sleep because there are so many things that could go up or down. Individuals born into families of wealth feel uncomfortable with it. The vicious cycle of wealth creates just as much suffering as the vicious cycle of poverty. —Lynne Twist, Fundraising from the Heart workshop, Santa Fe, New Mexico, September 2014 How did the myths surrounding money get created? What are the three pervasive myths regarding money? How do these lies have a...

Strategies for Success with the Teachable Spirit

Teaching a Strategies for Success class at Everest College gives the teachable spirit the opportunity to receive ideas from students in the discussion of how to be successful. Sometimes the weariness of attempting to be a better human being can get tiresome. Sometimes our salvation can come from finding a love for something like sports. How do we stay motivated to achieve success? How does sports provide the opportunity for success? What does the teachable spirit think is at the heart of strategies for success? A student in my class captured the essence of my lecture with the following three points. I feel that these three statements really reflect the heart of strategies for success. Remembering where I came from. Understanding and honoring where I am...

Believing in Others with the Teachable Spirit

Believing in Others with the Teachable Spirit

How does an individual help another human being live up to their potential? What does the teachable spirit say to a person to help them overcome their self limitations? How can we believe in others when we want to encourage them to do their best? The teachable spirit appreciates Dr. Warren Bruhl’s philosophy that when speaking to a fellow human being, taking the approach of being upfront with that person when you know there is a potential flaw, and speaking of your highest expectation of them will divert potential disappointment. In other words, tell them how marvelous they are and that you know they will live up to a higher standard than those around them. Does that seem too Pollyanna? Recently, the teachable spirit came across a video clip of Viktor...
