Thoughts are Things: Reflecting on Scripture

The word devar in Hebrew is translated “things” as well as “word.” In other words, in Hebrew, words and things are the same word. The book of Deuteronomy starts with, “These are the words,” or devarim, which is the plural of devar. Reflecting on scripture, we see that Paul encouraged us to “think on these things.” Because thoughts are things and words create, what we think about becomes the words we speak, creating our life as a result. When you are encouraging growth, what is real, permanent, and lasting change? When your child changes on the outside or from the inside? From all appearances, Joseph was a slave accused of adultery thrown into prison. It really looked like he was an adulterer. It really looked like he was in a terrible situation.
