Teachable Spirit: Prayer For Our Children

Judaism has a fondness for blessings, liturgy, and repeated traditions that help root its faith deep in the heart, creating a teachable spirit; Messianic Judaism is no exception. At a recent meeting with members of my congregation, one attendant shared this prayer with us, which he recites over his children every Erev Shabbat (Friday evening).

May it be the will of our Father in heaven, to place in your heart love and fear of Him.

May you be disciples of Yeshua (Jesus) all the days of your life.

May your eyes look straightforward, may your mouth speak wisdom,

May your heart meditate with reverence,

May your hands be engaged in Torah and mitzvot,

And may your feet hasten to do the will of our Father in heaven.

May you stand under the Chuppah, and may the Almighty grant you children

Who will grow up to be righteous, following Yeshua (Jesus) all of their days.

May He grant that your livelihood come with honesty, ease, and abundance;

A livelihood that will free you to serve God and teach your children.

May He bless you with a good, long life together with all the righteous in Israel.
Amen

The emphasis that day was placed on the phrase, “May He grant that your livelihood come with honesty, ease, and abundance,” as we were discussing pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors, aspiring to create a teachable spirit in our children, so that they would have the freedom to pursue their faith with God.
