Understanding the Experiences of Life with Ken and Sandy Taylor

Why is the work of Ken and Sandy Taylor important, aside from the fact that they are Dr. Bruhl’s parents? What are they doing in Kenya, and why is it significant? What is it about their work that is so great that Dr. Bruhl and Dr. Kahrs would invest their time as well?

Greatness is established over time through the process of understanding the experiences of life and evaluating priorities, making sacrifices, and desiring to create an impact in the world. Greatness can be defined using the acronym GREAT:

  • Greater Purpose
  • Rigor
  • Endurance
  • Authority
  • Trust in God

Often we attribute greatness to historical figures and leaders of our times; however, sometimes when we take a closer look at our families, we find everyday heroes like my father, who received his bronze star last year for his service as a WWII veteran, or when Dr. Bruhl went to investigate the work his mother, Mrs. Sandy Taylor, was doing in the Kimana Rift Valley of Kenya.

In both cases, our parents just continued to do what they had always done, with rigor and endurance, trusting God, being faithful to the task at hand, and staying true to the greater purpose God had put on their hearts.

During the past 22 years that his mom was working in Kenya, Dr. Bruhl never went to see the work Sandy Taylor was doing, and in his younger years, felt a little put out that she was not in the U.S. to see her grandchildren grow up. As God began to work on Dr. Bruhl with His chisel, chipping away and revealing little by little what he was to do, Dr. Bruhl felt compelled to return to Kenya and see what Ken and Sandy Taylor were doing.

“I was blown away with what they had created with such limited resources using their own dime and a little help from a church in Montana. If I did not become involved, without a succession plan, the work would collapse, which is typical of businesses and charities who are just working hard to do something.” —Dr. Warren Bruhl

From my own experience of traveling to Kenya and witnessing first hand the work that Douglas Monene is doing with Ingrid Education Centre in the Matopeni slums of Nairobi, Kenya, I would agree.

I marvel at how Douglas is able to put together a physical school for 200 children with no ongoing support or sustainability, with sheer grit and determination, trusting God to provide in the face of abject poverty.

What Dr. Bruhl saw his parents doing in Kenya was exactly the same thing: putting together and operating a school in a place where there was no such facility, raising the standard of education in a location that is the poorest and most uneducated of all of Kenya, Rift Valley, and Tanzania. Ken and Sandy Taylor had found The Hole in the Gospel described by Richard Stearns, President of World Vision, in his book of the same name.

This was the missing piece of the puzzle Dr. Bruhl was looking for, helping him to understand the reason why his mother had continued with her work and stayed in Kenya.

The people in the Rift Valley of Kenya needed her more.

My next question is: Why is chiropractic care so important to the people of the Kimana Rift Valley in Kenya that Dr. Warren Bruhl and Dr. Jeff Kahrs would want to make it a household name?
