Visiting Ingrid with the Teachable Spirit

What has happened since the teachable spirit went to Kenya in 2013? Who visited Ingrid with the teachable spirit in 2015? What did they do while they were there?

Stepping foot onto the property where Ingrid Education Centre is located after nearly two years absence filled the teachable spirit with an incredible sense of excitement and joy.

I could not believe what the director, Douglas Monene, had accomplished in such a short time! The school is double in size and has a second story added to the first, finished latrines, a kitchen, nice office, and a place for the security guard to sleep at night.

Experiencing that joy with me were individuals participating in a mission with Dreamweaver International; Dr. Warren Bruhl, the director, Ken and Sandy Taylor, Dr. Bruhl’s parents, Robyn McCoy, Dr. Bruhl’s aunt, Dr. Jeff Kahrs, my personal chiropractor, Dr. Dave Neubauer, director of HealthSource, his wife, Carrie Neubauer, and Carrie Barnett, who also works for HealthSource.

Collectively, the chiropractors adjusted all the students of the school that day, as well as teachers, staff members, parents, and neighbors. None of them had every experienced chiropractic care before; it was a new revelation to them. Dr. Jeff Kahrs brought 300 dresses from Little Dresses for Africa, a grassroots organization here in the US that makes pillowcase dresses for girls all over the world. Lining up against the wall in order from shortest to tallest, the girls waited excitedly for one of the ladies of our group or one of the teachers to distribute a dress to each of them.

My suitcases were stuffed with goodies from my parents, Melvin and Joan Rasmussen:

  • 20 soccer balls
  • 300 jumping ropes
  • 300 pencils
  • 500 pens

The collective energy, joy, excitement, enthusiasm, passion, etc., was amazing. Reflecting on that day and sharing my experience with an individual recently, I was told,

“Your face lights up when you tell the story!”

Yes, it is rather astounding. Those of us who experienced the excitement, chatter, and delight from everyone because of the adjustments, dresses, balls, or ropes, were profoundly changed that day. Dr. Warren Bruhl, Executive Director of Gear for Goals, and one of the members of the Board of Directors for Dreamweaver International promised to return to the school next year.

“This was a wonderful way to start the mission trip for Dreamweaver International,” he said.
