Why Sports? With the Teachable Spirit

Understanding the experiences of life with Gear For Goals, the teachable spirit recognizes that the dream about sports is part of every child’s life, but many do not actually get to play. They see it on TV or watch other children participate, but the ability to join in is far from their experience.

Why is sports so vital to the maturation of children?

While your list may be different than mine, here are a few attributes that playing sports provides:

  • esprit de corps (feelings of enthusiasm, loyalty, and devotion to a group)
  • developing teamwork
  • creating camaraderie
  • learning how to handle winning and losing
  • opportunity for leadership

Just like Gear For Goals, you can come up with a number of other ideas how sports can change a child’s life. The teachable spirit is about getting to the root, the subatomic level, the place of inception that drives the dream. Answering the question of why sports can best be found in the story of a fishing village in Thailand called Koh Panyee. The children had always watched soccer (football) played on TV, but never had the opportunity to play.

Can you guess why?

Surrounded by water, undaunted, the children created their own “field” in the water, and won the hearts of their village with their teachable spirit. They allowed their environment to teach them and became one of Thailand’s best soccer teams. Watch this short video from TMBbrand Channel about the indomitable spirit of these boys and the effect sports had on the entire village:

Dr. Warren Bruhl desires to change the lives of children in other countries with sports for the very same reason that these children in Panyee wanted to participate in soccer. He began by taking baseball to Kimana, Kenya in 2012, and continues to influence under resourced children around the world with the opportunity of sports by providing sports gear and the opportunity to learn where there is none. Join Dr. Warren Bruhl today in making a difference in children’s lives around the world by donating sports equipment, taking equipment to countries in need when you travel, or contributing financially to this cause.
